Voluntary Social Year / Youth Voluntary Service


If you would like to complete a voluntary social year in Bremen, you must obtain information from the approved FSJ providers of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft (LAG) der Freiwilligendienste. The Senate Department "Youth" is responsible for supervision, but does not arrange specific places for you.

The youth volunteer services in Bremen are coordinated by the FSJ providers of the LAG of Volunteer Services. This is an educational year for young people, which usually begins in August or September and lasts a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 18 months.

As part of the voluntary service, the law stipulates

  • an appropriate monthly allowance,
  • possibly accommodation and/or meals (or a lump sum for material costs),
  • the payment of social security contributions,
  • a vacation entitlement (at least 26 days for a 12-month assignment),
  • a qualified certificate,
  • Advice and support from the organization and assignment location,
  • free participation in seminars (at least 25 days for a 12-month placement)

Requirements

The voluntary services are aimed at people who

  • have completed compulsory full-time schooling but have not yet reached the age of 27
  • would like to gain an insight into social, societal, (inter)cultural and sporting fields of work
  • are looking for professional orientation and would like to get to know a professional field
  • want to improve their entry requirements for working life
  • would like to work predominantly in a practical capacity.
