Basic information
Lawyers from countries outside the EU may apply for admission to the Bar pursuant to Section 206 BRAO if they come from a country that is a member of the World Trade Organization and is listed in the current Implementing Regulation to Section 206 BRAO.
The lawyer is entitled to provide legal services under the professional title of his/her country of origin. He/she shall indicate the country of origin when using the professional title. He/she is entitled to use the designation "Member of the Bar" at the same time in professional dealings (Section 207 (4) BRAO).
Members of the Member States of the World Trade Organization who exercise a profession corresponding in training and powers to the profession of lawyer under this Act shall be entitled to provide legal services in the field of the law of the State of origin and international law. The professions shall be determined by the Federal Ministry of Justice by means of a statutory order (Section 206 (1) BRAO).
Nationals of other states who exercise a profession corresponding in training and authority to that of a lawyer under German law shall be entitled to provide legal services in the field of the law of the state of origin if reciprocity with the state of origin is guaranteed. The Federal Ministry of Justice, with the consent of the Bundesrat, shall determine by ordinance the states to whose nationals this applies and the professions (Section 206 (2) BRAO).
Requirements
- Application
- Member of a foreign profession in accordance with § 206 Para. 2 in conjunction with the Ordinance on the Implementation of § 206 of the Federal Lawyers' Act (Bundesrechtsanwaltsordnung) who is authorized to practice the profession in the country of origin in accordance with the laws of the country of origin,
- Proof of professional liability insurance in accordance with § 51 BRAO via an insurance policy taken out in Germany
- If applicable, original or certified copy of the doctoral degree certificate or other proof of the acquisition of academic degrees
- Receipt of the administrative fee

Proof of citizenship according to § 3 paragraph 2 sentence 1 Law on the Activities of European Lawyers in Germany (EuRAG)
- Resume
Curriculum vitae with photograph indicating the name at birth.
- Proof of professional affiliation
Proof of a certificate from the country of origin confirming membership of the profession together with a certified translation.
