As a parent or guardian, you may decide that your child should not attend religious education classes at school.
Basic information
Religious education at school should provide pupils with a basic knowledge of religions, enable them to understand and assess the importance of religions in their lives and encourage them to recognize and acknowledge the religious beliefs of others. This objective applies to all children and young people, regardless of the religious or ideological background they come to school with.
As a parent or guardian, you can decide whether or not your child should take part in religious education. If you do not wish your child to take part in religious education, you have the option of deregistering your child or children from the subject at school. After reaching the age of religious majority (from the age of 14), the pupils themselves decide on their participation in religious education.
If elementary school pupils are deregistered from religious education, they will attend lessons in a parallel class instead. Pupils at secondary level I receive alternative lessons in philosophy instead of religious education.
To deregister from religious education, please contact the relevant school. Deregistration can be done informally.
