Asylum procedure and residence permit

If you come to Germany as an asylum seeker/refugee, you must apply for asylum as soon as possible after your arrival in Germany. In Bremen, you register for this at the:

Central Reception Center for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in the State of Bremen (ZASt), Lindenstraße 110, 28755 Bremen.

There it will be decided whether you can stay in Bremen or have to be distributed to another federal state.

Once you have been admitted, you can file your asylum application with the BAMF, which will then be responsible for you. From the BAMF you will also receive a Aufenthaltsgestattung, which serves as proof that you are allowed to stay in Germany for the duration of the asylum procedure. You must carry this Aufenthaltsgestattung with you at all times. The Aufenthaltsgestattung contains the requirement where you must take up residence and whether you are allowed to work. You can find more information about the asylum procedure on the BAMF website (see under "i Where can I find out more?").

If you have been assigned to Bremen for the duration of the asylum procedure, the Migration Office is responsible for extending the residence permit for the duration of the asylum procedure and for changing the requirement if you are allowed to work.

For the duration of the asylum procedure, the asylum seeker receives a residence permit. This is issued for the first time by the BAMF with a validity of three months and is extended continuously by the migration office until the asylum procedure is completed.
(The residence permit does not have the legal character of a residence title. It only certifies a temporary residence during the asylum procedure).

The Aufenthaltsgestattung contains conditions for taking up residence and for permission to work and study; these conditions are binding.

Travel abroad is not possible with the residence permit.
