Applying for accompanied driving from the age of 17

Procedure

Requirements as for a normal driving license

Earliest start of training:

  • 16 ½ years old
  • Theoretical test at the earliest three months before the 17th birthday
  • practical driving test one month before the birthday.

The application is submitted via the driving school, the legal guardians (usually the parents) must give their consent. The accompanying persons must be named.

After the application has been submitted, the authorities check whether there are any suitability concerns.

Only when suitability has been established can the TÜV be commissioned to carry out the test.

In any case, the theoretical and practical driving test with compulsory training must be taken at a driving school.

The test certificate is issued after the practical driving test has been passed, provided that the driver has already reached the age of 17 at this time.

If the test is taken before the 17th birthday, the test certificate can be collected from the driving license authority after the 17th birthday.

The test certificate remains valid for a transitional period of three months after the 18th birthday.

The EU card driving license will be sent to you by post by the driving license authority when you turn 18.

Subsequent changes to accompanying persons in the test certificate

If a new accompanying person is to be added to the test certificate after the driver's license has been issued, this must be requested from the driving license authority.

The following are required:

  • Declaration of consent from each accompanying person with copy of ID and driver's license
  • Declaration of consent from the legal guardian for the accompanying person
  • A fee of EUR 17.70 must be paid to the driving license authority for each accompanying person.

Applications for BF 17 will be converted into a general application if

  • this is received within 3 months before reaching the age of 18 or
  • missing documents are only submitted within the above-mentioned 3-month period and the application is therefore only complete within this period.

The person concerned, including the driving school, will not be informed.

The number of accompanying persons is not limited. Participation in a preparatory event is voluntary, but is expressly and strongly recommended. The accompanying persons are not driving instructors. They are therefore not permitted to interfere with the steering wheel. Instead, they should provide assistance in anticipatory driving, pass on their experience and exert a moderating influence on driving behavior. They should be able to behave correctly in conflict situations; this is often difficult without preparation.

The obligation to be accompanied by a chaperone no longer applies from the age of 18.
